Call for Community Participation:Stories and Memories Requested for Historic Homestake Opera House Century Book Project
Why? Help tell the story of the magnificent Historic Homestake Opera House (HHOH) nicknamed "The Jewel of the Black Hills." This beautiful, 200-page, full-color memory book will include the entire history of the HHOH, commemorating 100 years of performing arts, recreation, movies, billiards, first dates, bowling alley fun, swimming lessons, and more. This historical book will be available for purchase in 2014 and will feature submitted photos, letters and stories of the people who enjoyed this longtime Black Hills hub located on Main Street Lead. A DVD of recorded audio and video interviews will also be included in the back of the book. This project is being coordinated by HHOH executive director Sarah Carlson and the Century Project Committee. “This building holds so much history. It's important to record the experiences people had here – those experiences and stories are what makes this place so special,” says Carlson. Also helping with the project is Lead-Deadwood High School senior, Sarah Shoop, for part of her Senior Project. “My family has been in Lead for generations, and I’ve known about the Opera House since I was little,” says Shoop. “It’s a great opportunity to be a part of and learn about something so historically important in my community.” Carlson agrees. “People so enjoyed this building for decades – and are continuing to do so. But it comes alive again with those stories and memories.” |
